Labrador Puppies

Come to Visit Us
When we plan a breeding, we will share information about it with you. We invite you to come to visit our farm and meet the dogs. Most of the time, we breed one of our four females to a male who may not be owned by us. We will provide you with the contact information you will need if you would like to meet the planned sire of an upcoming litter.

Because of busy schedules, we ask that you contact us before coming to visit. We want to be sure to be able to spend time with you. Unless we plan ahead, we may not be able to do that. Please send e-mail: headcrow@apk.net or call us at 330-722-7554. We will respond to you promptly.

Reservations and Deposits...and References
Once we determine that a puppy is something that will fit well into your home, we will be happy to reserve one for you. We ask for a deposit of $100, and we "log" your reservation in as it is received. We do not reserve puppies without deposits. Everyone with a deposit knows where he/she is in the selection list. We will be happy to provide you with references about our dogs and our relationships with buyers over past years.

If we are not able to provide the color and sex that you have requested, and what we have (once the pups are on the ground) is not acceptable to you, we will return your deposit. If you acquire another pup and we have turned buyers away, we will not refund your deposit. Back to Top

Picking Out Your Puppy
Buyers with reservations are notified when the pups are on the ground, and then again when we are ready to have you come choose your puppy. The selection process is carried out in the same order as the deposits were received. Pups are usually available for selection by our buyers at seven weeks. Back to Top

When Can I Pick Up My Puppy?
We usually have a basic exam performed on our puppies' eyes at seven weeks of age, and no pup is released to its new home until this has been done. This involves taking the puppies to Columbus, to a specialist, and we have to fit this into his schedule. Normally this does not delay the delivery of puppies past the 8th week.

Delayed Delivery Or Boarding Of Puppies
Sometimes a buyer is not able to take delivery of a puppy at the time originally planned. This is generally not a problem for us, and we are always happy to discuss your special needs. Also, it sometimes happens that a family needs a place to leave a young pup for a few days if the family has planned a vacation near to the time they are planning to bring a new pup home. We are glad to have our puppies come back to visit at Crow Haven. Most boarding kennels will NOT take dogs under six months of age, so be sure to ask us about this.

Our Puppies Go Home With...
When we release puppies to their new homes, they go with:

  1. a complete record of all health & veterinary attention they have received;
  2. a Sale Agreement, which is a contract between buyer and seller;
  3. AKC Registration Application (provided it has come back from AKC in time!);
  4. a starter kit of puppy food so that you can provide continuity in the new home;
  5. a schedule of required veterinary attention through the 16th week and
  6. recommendations about organizations that provide puppy socialization classes.

Puppies Need to Go to School...
We strongly believe that all pups, once they have acquired good vaccination coverage to protect them against the major diseases such as Distemper, Parvovirus and Coronavirus, should be taken to a class where they can learn to socialize with other people and other dogs. These are often referred to as “Puppy Socialization” or “Puppy Kindergarten” classes. They are not truly obedience classes. They are settings which provide pup and owner the opportunity to interact with other people and other dogs of varying ages. These are the first step, much as Preschool is often a place where children acquire social and experiential skills prior to going to Kindergarten or First Grade.

All Labrador Retrievers are athletes. They are high-energy dogs with a desire to be DOING something. As a result, they provide challenges for most owners and sometimes can be a bit frustrating. Using good resources and working with other folks who have skills and experience with dogs of all ages can help prevent problem behaviors.

We can provide referrals to organizations which can give you ongoing support with your new dog.
